PLEASE consider RUSSELL RESCUE rather than a puppy!
Baby UPDATE: Baby is proving to be an awesome family member. She's aching for someone to concentrate on. Her adjustment period was a bit long. She's an insecure little thing. She needed everyone here to prove themselves "worth trusting." We took her to her first possible placement, and she reacted VERY aggressively toward the dog that was already there, and that left us completely puzzled, because she's so good with our dogs. It appears that this little girl is very picky about who she likes, but she's proving to simply not be as brave as she tries to make us think she is. If another dog takes the lead, she just falls into place. Tonight, she stole a toy from Priscilla, and Scot and I grew wide eyed at each other... CERTAIN that a fight would ensue, but she just took the toy, and wasn't threatened at all when Priscilla jumped down and confronted her. It was completely peaceful. Baby needs someone who is terrier savvy. If you're that person, you'll have a sweet, little admirer who will fall right into place in your household. Notes: As cute and personable as they come, Baby never forgets she is a Jack Russell Terrier, and has the drive and tenacity of her breed. 5 years old and full of charm, Baby has come to the Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland because she chases neighborhood pets if given the opportunity. Reported to be intolerant of small dogs, Baby tends to ignore those bigger than she is. Quick and agile, Baby loves her walks and exercise, but prefers not to live in close proximity to cats or other pets. Over the years Baby has faced a number of health challenges beginning with meningitis in 2005. She was also diagnosed with megaesophagus, a condition where food is often regurgitated due a deficit in the contracting ability of the esophagus. It is important to note that Baby has shown no signs or symptoms of megaesophagus in the shelter, has a healthy appetite and has had no episodes of regurgitating her food. New families will wish to bring copies of Baby's medical history to their vet and be prepared for the likelihood of higher than normal vet bills in the coming years should Baby's condition flare up. Baby's previous owners provided extraordinary veterinary care and worked closely with the Animal Neurological Clinic in Portland where Baby had numerous tests and procedures done. Baby has lived successfully with children and was reported to be gentle and sweet with them. Cats are not a good fit for Baby and she will not be asked to share her home with felines. Baby has so many wonderful attributes, and her love of people is endearing. The JRT is a dog bred to pursue vermin and other small creatures, so her habit of chasing animals in the neighborhood is not a surprise. It will be important for Baby to be well-exercised so she can maintain her terrific manners in the house. For a family willing to monitor, treat and manage her health issues, and allow her a reprieve from supervising the neighborhood, Baby is a delightful, fun and funny companion.
